BARRELHOUSE CHUCK (USA) Piano & Vocals

BARRELHOUSE CHUCK One of the few Chicago blues pianists to have studied under Sunnyland Slim, Pinetop Perkins, Lafayette Leake and Little Brother Montgomery, Barrelhouse Chuck draws on this distinguished lineage to create a blues, boogie-woogie and barrelhouse piano style that places him at the forefront of this celebrated tradition.

Born in Ohio (Columbus, OH - July 10, 1958) where he first learned to play the drums at the age of 5, Barrelhouse Chuck, whose real name is Charles Goering, later switched to the piano and was living in Florida when he heard his first Muddy Waters record with Otis Spann on piano. This was a major turning point in Chuck's life.

After that Chuck started buying the records of every blues artist he could find. A quick study on the keyboards it wasn't long before Chuck had formed his own band and began opening for the likes of Willie Dixon, B.B. King and Bo Diddley. It was also during this time (the late 70's) that Chuck and some of his friends began following Muddy Waters around to get some first hand exposure to both Muddy and his then current piano player, Pinetop Perkins.

Chuck spent the next 10 years studying with the living legend, who Chuck called "the great-granddaddy of all the blues piano players". Through Sunnyland he met all the great blues musicians in Chicago, and often ended up playing with and hanging out with them. People like Pinetop Perkins, Lafayette Leake and Little Brother Montgomery took Chuck under their wings, invited him into their homes and made him feel a part of their families.

During that time Chuck developed his immense mastery of blues piano and went on to perform and record with most of the notable blues musicians in Chicago-people like Louis Myers, Jimmy Rogers, Jimmy Dawkins, Billy Boy Arnold, Hubert Sumlin, Henry Townsend, S.P. Leary, Detroit Jr. and Big Smokey Smothers, among others. During the past two decades Chuck has played all over the U.S., Canada, Mexico, South America and tours Europe regularly. He has also appeared more than a half dozen times at the Chicago Blues Festival.

FRANK MUSCHALLE (GER) Piano

FRANK MUSCHALLE Frank Muschalle, Germany, has been on tour in Europe for more than fifteen years. He has become one of the most popular boogie woogie pianists.

Frank was born in 1969. After 11 years studying classical piano he discovered the joys of boogie woogie at the age of 19. Since then he has devoted himself entirely to this music. The boogie woogie trio Ammons, Johnson and Lewis as well as pianists like Axel Zwingenberger, Little Brother Montgomery or Cow Cow Davenport have deeply influenced his development. Within a short period of time Frank has acquired a fine reputation not only among insiders.

Appearances on TV and radio have contributed to Frank´s remarkable success. As early as October 1995 his debut-CD,"Great Boogie Woogie News", was published by the Vienna label Document Records. Afterwards Frank gave performances in jazz clubs and festivals, on a tour of Austria with the Mojo Bluesband and Red Holloway, at concerts in the Jazzland and the Starclub (Vienna), and at concerts with Axel Zwingenberger, Vince Weber and Martin Pyrker. Quite soon Frank Muschalle outgrew his role as a local talent; invitations to concerts such as the "Stars of Boogie Woogie" - Festival in the Vienna Concert Hall speak for themselves.

In March 1997 the second CD, "Battin´ The Boogie", came out, also published by Document Records. The production caused a sensation among international experts. In September 1998 Frank was invited on a two - week tour of South Carolina (USA) with the Mojo Bluesband. In the course of this tour, recordings with Jimmy McCracklin and Nappy Brown were made for Ripete Records (USA).

In 2002 the "40 - Years American - Folk - Blues - Festival Jubilee" took place in Germany and Frank played on this Tour with Blues-Stars Hubert Sumlin, Carey Bell, Bob Stroger and Lousiana Red. Two Month later, Frank was invited to the "Jumpin´at the Flagships" - Tour through all parts of Switzerland. He played there with Red Holloway, Jimmy Coe, Carrie Smith and Rusty Zinn. The Swiss TV recorded a one hour TV - Show of this performance. At this point of time, Frank has recorded 7 different cds and his musical style is well-known for its superb technical fireworks and subtle nuances. Time and again he creates an expectant atmosphere in his audience which is constantly heightened by the skilful changes of musical mood.

LLUÍS COLOMA (ESP) Piano

Lluís Coloma Born in Barcelona in 1973, Lluís Coloma is one of the most recognized and in-demand pianists in the European Blues scene. Today Lluis is considered a specialist and garners accolades and awards such as “Best Catalan Musician 2003” and “Artista BluesCat 2006”. When not recording and performing Lluís gives conferences and master classes on the history of Blues and Boogie Woogie piano and is one of the few pianists in Spain able to recreate the primitive styles of the genre. He is the artistic director of the Barcelona Blues Festival, organizes the annual Blues & Boogie Reunion, the Barcelona Blues Society’s Boogie Woogie Jubilee and is a mainstay on the European blues & piano festival circuit.

From the beginning, Lluís has made a mark in Blues & Boogie Woogie penning his own compositions on the critically acclaimed releases REMEMBER (Omix Records 2002), BOOGIEOLOGY (Fresh Sound Records 2003) and LONELY AVENUE (Swing Alley 2006). In his CD, BOOGIE PORTRAITS (Swing Alley 2008), Lluís recorded duets with Blues & Boogie Woogie piano greats Carl Sonny Leyland, Barrelhouse Chuck, Mitch Woods, Bob Seeley, Mark “Mr B” Braun, Frank Muschalle and others. In 2007 Lluís played festivals in the United States alongside David Maxwell, Mitch Woods, Bruce Katz, and Axel Zwingenberger. His last, ROCKIN' MY BLUES IN CHICAGO (Swing Alley 2011), is a tribute to the great Blues pianist from the Windy City, Chicago, produced by Barrelhouse Chuck, Lluís back to the Blues roots, with a exquisite and surprising production.
