WENDY DeWITT The Queen of Boogie Woogie

Intense, personal and with a contagious smile, Wendy DeWitt is inspired by a love of classic Chicago blues and Texas boogie woogie, and seasoned by work with Chicago guitarist Steve Freund and R&B legend Hank Ballard, and a show schedule of 200 dates a year. Hadda Brooks bestowed Wendy with Queen status at one of the original Queen of the Boogie’s final shows.

Currently writing her 9th album Wendy also spends time organizing the Annual Queens of Boogie Woogie at the West Coast premiere jazz venue Yoshi's Oakland, the SRO International Boogie Woogie Festival at SFJAZZ and the Blues Piano Orgy Series. To insure that more people enjoy the thrill of boogie woogie and blues piano Wendy also teaches workshops at Berkeley's renowned JazzSchool and Centrum - Port Townsend Acoustic Blues Workshop.

Brought to the blues at the age of 10 while growing up over a country store in Glen Ellen, California her passion for music lead her to become a driving piano player and singer, in the tradition of Chicago Blues and Texas Boogie Woogie. Her influences range from Otis Spann, Memphis Slim, and Professor Longhair to Johnnie Johnson and Albert Ammons.

Festivals Wendy has performed at include the San Francisco Blues Festival, St. Croix Blues and Heritage Fest, Les Nuits de Boogie Woogie in Paris, and Lugano International Boogie Woogie Festival in Switzerland. She regularly tours, and Wendy and her duo partner Kirk Harwood are Finalists in the International Blues Challenge, Memphis, Tennessee.

BALÁZS DÁNIEL (HUN) - Piano

Daniel Balazs “alias Mr. Firehand is the most virtuoso boogie woogie pianist in Hungary”

Balázs Dániel was born in 1990, Győr, Hungary. He started to play piano for his own pleasure when he was 14 years old. Two years later, he accidentally heard a recording on which a boogie woogie pianist was playing. Since then he has become obsessed by boogie woogie.

He first heard live boogie woogie piano in Switzerland in 2006. Sitting in the audience, he decided that he would like to be a boogie woogie pianist.
His first solo appearance was in his hometown in 2007. This sell out concert would be followed by many performances in different cities of Hungary. In 2009, for the first time, he also showed his pianistic abilities abroad. Since then, he has played regularly in Austria, Germany, France, Switzerland, Poland and England. Also in 2009, he formed his trio with two great musicians from Győr, Koch Barnabás – drums and Zink Ferenc – double bass. The group completes the traditional boogie woogie sound with new elements.

“Mr. Firehand” has released several CDs during the last few years. He was only 18, when his first CD was released with the title “Burning Fingers” (2008). You can hear mostly his own boogie woogie and blues songs on it. In 2010, he recorded his next CD with his trio, called “Boogie In 3” (2010). His latest album is “Boogie Cocktail” (2012), which is also a solo recording. In addition to his signature boogie woogie, Balázs demonstrates his musical versatility by playing New Orleans Jazz numbers, together with plaintive blues and energetic stride tunes within his varied repertoire.

Balázs is the organizer and host of the one and only boogie woogie festival in Hungary, The Boogiefeszt – International Boogie Woogie Festival, Győr, first held in 2008.

STEFAN ULBRICHT (GER) - – Piano

Stefan Ulbricht Stefan Ulbricht was born in Bonn in February, 1982. Already at the age of 5, he became interested in music and started to take guitar lessons. At the age of 14 he switched to the piano and was infected by the „boogie and blues virus“ in 1997 while watching boogie and blues on tv.

As an autodidact, he began studying his favoured music style. It didn‘t take long that he learnt to know many famous musicians on concerts and jam sessions. He shares a very special and close relationship with the „grand master of boogie woogie“ in Germany, Leopold von Knobelsdorff. He owes him a lot of music al stimulations.

Since 1999, Stefan Ulbricht has been performing on various stages all over Germany as well as other countries in Europe, as there are: Hamburger Jazzmarathon, Pianistenfestival in Hamburg (Vince Weber, Gottfried Böttger, Frank Muschalle, Axel Zwingenberger, among others), Boogie Woogie Konzertexpress with Axel Zwingenberger, International Boogie Woogie Festival in Laroquebrou/Frankreich 2009, several Jazz Nights, regularly concerts in jazzclubs. According to his fresh and innovative style, not one single foot can resist this irrisistable rhythm.

Playing solo piano, or accompanied by other musicians, the audience enjoys his fast and melodious boogies as well as jazz and blues songs from the 30‘s, 40‘s and 50‘s. The rolling bass figures, played with his pounding left hand, and the swinging melody are his trademarks.

Stefan has recorded four Cds and in his latest CD „Big, Bigger, Boogie“, was recorded on the world‘s largest grand piano serially produced, the Fazioli F 308, in April 2009 with Moritz Schlömer on the drums, who is a versatile and exceptional boogie pianist, too.

On October 24, Stefan Ulbricht was honoured with the 2009 German Boogie Woogie Award „Pinetop“ as best piano player in the category „Rising Star 2009“. Since 2010 he is the organisator of the International Siegburg Boogie Night.

In his Cd, BOOGIE PORTRAITS (Swing Alley 2008), Lluís recorded duets with Blues & Boogie Woogie piano greats Carl Sonny Leyland, Barrelhouse Chuck, Mitch Woods, Bob Seeley, Mark “Mr B” Braun, Frank Muschalle and others.
