Steve "Big Man" Clayton, born in Birmingham (GB), is a highly gifted piano player and singer.
After finishing his classical studies, he decided to dedicate his musical life to his love of blues piano, and has remained true to himself and blues piano for over 30 years. His own compositions demonstrate his love for this music; a mixture of blues, boogie woogie, gospel and rock and roll, are all available to hear on 6 CD´s.
He presents himself on the stage totally relaxed and with great humour, although from the very first note, the audience realise that Steve „Big Man“ Clayton is a very serious artist, an artist of the highest calibre, an artist that is very much keeping the art of blues piano alive and kicking
Joerg Hegemann from Witten, Germany, has been on tour for more than 21 years. Born in 1966, he heard Boogie Woogie at first in a radio show in the early eighties and he was immediately enthusiastic of this kind of music. In 1983 he saw a concert of the great Axel Zwingenberger, who inspired Joerg to start playing Boogie Woogie Piano himself. Without any classical piano education he studied this dynamic kind of music in a self-educated way.
He loves the classical Boogie Woogie style of the “Big Three”, the Boogie heroes Albert Ammons, Meade Lux Lewis and Pete Johnson, who have made Boogie Woogie world famous up to now. Specially the very melodic and deep bluesy felt way of Albert Ammons is the most important influence for Joerg Hegemanns musically development.
Meanwhile Joerg Hegemann toured almost than a dozen European countries, from Norway to Swiss, from France to Hungary. He has played in radio and TV shows and played countless concerts in Jazzclubs and at Jazzfestivals. He has recorded five CD’s. For the 100th birthday anniversary of his musically idol, he produced the CD A Tribute To Albert Ammons with support by Lila Ammons, the granddaughter of the Boogie king. Playing Boogie Woogie in the authentic way, Joerg is well-known for his powerful and melodic style and on every stage he convinces the audience with his music.
Julian Phillips started playing the piano at the age of ten and soon after he was playing in front of small gatherings of people from the neighbourhood, arranged by his piano teacher. At fourteen he remembers first hearing a boogie woogie record at a friends’ house. Julian began to teach himself this infectious style of piano playing by listening to more records by the originators of boogie woogie such as Pinetop Smith, Jimmy Yancey, Clarence Loften to name a few. Like so many piano players from the era Julian also began to develop his singing style enabling him to incorporate material from other great blues artists including Big Bill Broonzy, Tampa Red and Louis Jordan.
Julian is gaining a great reputation for his wide and varied repertoire in the boogie woogie and blues genre, playing in a truly authentic way. He performs with The Stuff boogie woogie band on piano and vocals.
Julian is one of the founder organisers of the UK boogie woogie festival held at Sturminster Newton in Dorset England. He has an active solo career and duo act with bass box player Chris Davidson, appearing in festival programmes around Europe and the USA and has performing alongside many of his contemporaries including Axel Zwingenberger, Jean-Paul Amouroux, Jean-Pierre Bertrand, Martijn Schok, Frank Muschalle and many others.
